Job Description: 

Summary:  The quality laboratory (QA) applies scientific principles in quality control, raw materials, packaging, semi-finished food products and finished food.  The primary function of this position is to ensure the integrity and safety of finished products throughout the manufacturing process, to verify standards, establishes testing methods/operating procedures and adherence to protocols and policies.  A critical goal of this position is to support and assist Management in all aspects in order to drive the continuous improvement of quality.

 Reports to:  Quality Manager

Substitution Policy:  In the event that a substitution is necessary, this position will be substituted by the manager/supervisor to whom they report.

 Minimum Job Requirements

  • Lift up to 50lbs
  • Work standing or walking for most working shifts
  • Occasionally perform physical duties
  • English Proficiency
  • Basic computer operation skills
  • Ability to understand and operate basic product testing equipment
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good written and verbal communication
  • Creative problem solving
  • Knowledge of food safety principles

 Duties and Responsibilities:  Quality Controls

  • Perform process checks throughout the production, packaging, sanitation and warehousing functions of the company, including pre-operational checks and sanitation verification
  • Conduct quality control testing of raw materials, finished product and water
  • Execute sample submittals to external laboratory vendor for batch testing
  • Provide independent oversight of processes, verifying compliance to company standards and policies, and effectively communicating when there are deviations from standards or processes
  • Monitor HACCP/(HARPC) Implementation         
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of QA activities
  • Maintain organized inventory of retained products
  • Monitor the company traceability system and verify precise and continuous application
  • Perform data entry in Quality Assurance database (Excel, Access and/or dedicated software, CoA)
  • Identify quality, procedure and policy deviations; effectively report such deviations and provide accurate information in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with QA Manager in the evaluation and selection of new suppliers
  • Collaborate with QA Manager in the management of non-compliance for suppliers
  • Collaborate with QA Manager on the treatment of non-conforming product
  • Collaborate with QA Manager on the management of customer complaints
  • Manage treatment of non-conforming product in collaboration with Production and Quality Manager
  • Manage treatment of non-compliance for suppliers in collaboration with the appropriate departments and Quality Manager

 Sanitation & Pest Control

  • Conduct sanitation inspections
  • Supervise and facilitate pest control
  • Supervise cleaning of plant and equipment
  • Participate in continuous improvement plans
  • Provide technical assistance to production personnel as needed
  • Perform monthly hygiene inspections in all areas of the plant and report results
  • Maintain levels of hygienic equipment and cleaning supplies
  • Inspect the application of the Pest Control and Sanitation processes
  • Ensure proper sanitation of production line prior to start up

 Regulatory & Certifications

  • Assist management in the implementation of procedures, protocols and policies and monitoring for compliance (ex. FDA, Kosher, Gluten Free, Non GMO Project, BRC, Organic)
  • Assist with Audits as necessary
  • Prepare, manage, record, store and update documentation of the Integrated Management System (IMS) with Quality Manager
  • Maintain ongoing company compliance with all applicable regulations and third party audit requirements
  • Assist management with customer requests of regulatory aspects and certifications
  • Propose and assist in the establishment of corrective and preventative actions
  • Perform internal audits in collaboration with the Quality Manager
  • Assist in training employees on HACCP fundamentals, Food Safety, Company Processes and FDA Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Oversee the proper practices for Non-GMO, Gluten Free and Organic production

 Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Knowledge of FDA GMP’s
  • Understanding of HACCP principles
  • Advanced Microsoft Office knowledge
  • 3 years of experience in QA/QC of food manufacturing

 Education

  • Degree in Food Science or Food Technology, or Chemistry/Biology or meaningful working experience in Food Quality labs
