 Ken’s Foods, manufacturer of “Ken’s Steak House Salad Dressing” and “Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbecue Sauce” is seeking a self-motivated, team-oriented individual to join our growing R&D Department. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on manager that posses the skills and fortitude to work in a fast paced environment.  The R&D Manager will be responsible for independently taking new, improved and optimized products from concept through successful commercialization by utilizing skills in formulation, product testing, and translation from bench to large scale production. Interacts with Sales, Marketing, Procurement, Manufacturing, QA and other functions to ensure proper project execution.

Previous experience with dressings or sauces preferred
  •     New Product Development/Product Improvements/Cost reductions (80%)
  •     Develop prototype products using research lab, pilot lab, manufacturing facilities and equipment that meet project criteria.
  •     Lead, manage, and conduct plant trials to validate formulas and processes including process capability study. Collaborate with Operations and QA personnel on critical product attributes and process controls.
  •     Provides solutions to a wide range of difficult problems by applying advanced technical knowledge and experience.
  •     Selects and evaluates raw materials.
  •     Designs and conducts shelf life studies, including product and package performance under various conditions.
  •     Works with outside labs, co-packed manufacturers, ingredient suppliers and equipment vendors as needed by project activity.
  •     Manages and conducts multiple, independent and complex research and/or development projects. Defines project objectives, organizing and prioritizing tasks and conducting experiments and analyses.
  •     Coordinates and completes small and medium projects or manages segments of larger projects. Defines project objectives, organizing and prioritizing tasks and conducting experiments and analyses.
  •     Performs measurements and statistical analysis.
  •     Provide technical support to Marketing, Sales, Manufacturing, and external customers in the areas of product features and benefits, product solutions, and ingredient functionality.
  •     Plans and conducts presentations of new and existing products to staff and/or customers.
  •     Performs related responsibilities, as needed, to support Ken’s Foods business objectives.
  •     Provides technical support to Operations to resolve product related production issue by identifying root cause, develop technical solutions, and implement changes.
  •     Documents all formulas, process development and tests which have been conducted and records results of such tests according to department protocol.
  •     Prepare and document all plant validation trials according to department protocol.
  •     Maintains a sanitary, safe and orderly work environment.
  •     Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Culinary Arts, Chemistry or related field.  Master’s degree is preferred.
  •     Minimum 7 years of product development experience.  Technical expertise in the dressings and sauces category is preferred.
  •     Ability to work effectively with R&D; peers, Project Team members and plant personnel to drive results
  •     Ability to coach/lead less experienced R&D; associates
  •     Ability to collaborate with customers to determine requirements and design tailored products
  •     Working within a laboratory environment
  •     Working knowledge of food manufacturing, quality and food safety systems, sanitation, allergens, SOP’s and safety protocols
  •     PC Skills (Excel, Word, database, statistical software) and the ability to create spreadsheets, computer analysis, report writing, and presentations
  •     Able to accept and interpret direction competently and professionally
  •     Effectively manage priorities and dynamic deadlines
  •     Self-motivated, flexible and positive in a fast-paced business environment
  •     Efficient time management and communication
  •     Problem-solving and analytical skills
  •     Demonstrated technical expertise / PD experience.
