Job Description: 
The Raw Material Quality Control Technician I is responsible for inspecting raw materials at the time of receiving, sampling product for quality testing, verifying purity, and ensuring product quality and food safety. This position is ideally suited for the individual that can critically observe the operational tasks associated with the manufacturing of food products, and possesses the ability to accurately document any deficiencies with the raw ingredients used in the manufacturing process. The Raw Material QC Tech I must be able to recognize acceptable product handling and storage conditions, recognize the subtle differences in product appearance and granulation, and have a clear understanding of the objectives of Good Manufacturing Practices, Food Safety, HACCP and Food Defense. This position reports directly to the Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Inspect, sample, and evaluate raw materials at the time of receipt at Bob’s Red Mill.
  • Conduct standardized tests on food products to ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Assist raw material receivers with raw material loads that deviate from standard requirements, including inspecting product for damage, pest infestation, tampering, water damage, and any other conditions that may compromise the product. All deviations shall be reported to the Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance and the Director of Supply Chain.
  • Analyze raw materials using various test methods, including analytical chemistry
  • Investigate & communicate all quality results plus recommend corrections to the Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance and the Supply Chain department.
  • Verify equipment calibration and makes the necessary adjustments.
  • Audit documentation of food test results and vendor provided documentation.
  • Enter data into spreadsheets and maintain meticulous, legible data reports.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Order laboratory supplies.
  • Complete clean-up of lab and equipment.
  • Monitors Good Manufacturing Practices of all individuals in the plant and warehouse and advises infractions to supervisors as appropriate.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Exceptional interpersonal and assertiveness skills, necessary to maintain effective and cordial working relationships while enduring the pressure of being a person whose foremost responsibility is quality.
  • Good physical dexterity with the ability to climb step ladders and stairs, squat, kneel, stand for long periods of time.
  • Possesses good vision, corrected or uncorrected, to adequately read fine print and be able to distinguish objects or typewritten words that are similar.
  • Must be able to probe tote bags with six foot long grain probe weighting approximately 9 pounds.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally to all employees and supervisory staff.
  • Ability to document findings in recorded form by means of data input on a computer and/or writing long hand in a notebook or preprinted form.
  • Must be able to read and understand charts, measuring scales and devices, perform math calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Will also need to calculate percentages.
  • Intermediate computer skills; Ability to learn IT systems quickly including ERP system.
  • Ability to write SOPs and work instructions.
  • Developed sensory skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel on trips up to 5 days.
  • Ability to work both individually and as member of a team.
  • HS Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • 2-5 years practical experience in Food Safety or Management of Quality or Production, or Project Management in the food industry.
  • Detailed knowledge and track record of successful implementation of food manufacturing policies and procedures.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
Physical Demands:
  • May be exposed to significant extremes in temperature, noise, and dust.
  • Occasional lifting, must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • May work with hazardous chemicals in a laboratory environment.
Work Environment:
  • The primary work environment is within the warehouse and the laboratory. Will need to travel between multiple facility locations, potential multiple times in a shift.
